Keeping Your Family Calm in an Emergency

Written By: Lee Flynn

Dealing with an emergency is rarely easy, but you can make the process simpler by preparing in advance. Many families have no emergency plan in place. The unfortunate reality is that most people will experience an emergency situation at some point. Hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and even blackouts can leave your family in a panic if you have no plan in place. By preparing in advance, you can keep your family calm in an emergency.

How to Dye a Backpack – Quickly and Safely

 Original Article:

by

So the fateful day comes, and you are finally facing a true, prolonged SHTF situation. This is it, the big one.

There’s just one problem: your bug-out bag, despite all of its better properties, is an entirely unsuitable bright and cheery color, one that is liable to attract attention, and get you spotted and subsequently shaken down for its contents. That is a bad move no matter how you slice it.

Lucky for you, you don’t have to be stuck with a high-visibility pack when the time comes to go seriously low profile. With just a few supplies, and a little bit of time and ingenuity you can dye your backpack a color that is more discreet and suitable for a camouflage base.

Nearly any backpack can be dyed, and if you take a little care in the process it doesn’t even have to be that messy.

The skills you learn for dyeing your backpack can also apply to many other garments and pieces of equipment, making this a simple skill that can serve you well for life.

In today’s article I will show you a couple of different methods for dyeing your pack, be it a bug out bag, get home bag, or any other kind of backpack.

What Happens If You Don’t Evacuate: It’s Not Just About You

The question some, if not many people have is “Can I be charged and/or arrested for failing to heed a mandatory evacuation order. The answer is yes, in some states, but not likely. It is akin to a curfew issued in some cities due to civil unrest or a natural disaster. A violation can lead to fines and or incarceration in some cases.

In North Carolina, for example, the governor can “Direct and compel the evacuation of all, or part of the population from any stricken or threatened area within the state during a state of emergency”. “Anyone who violates an evacuation order can be charged with a class 2 misdemeanor, which can be punishable by up to 30 days of confinement, probation, or community service” (Blitzer, 2016).

Ramen Noodles as a Food Prep

The Ramen Noodle question is one of those prepper age-old questions… Do I put it in my preps or not?  Everyone has an opinion on the food they store… So bear with mine…

After years of prepping, I just started adding Ramen Noodles to my preps, just like I’ve started adding Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.  Firstly, because Suburban has a three-year-old that cannot live without Kraft Mac & Cheese. Secondly, once upon a time when I was at my financial low point in life, I would buy Ramen Noodles, chicken bullion cubes, frozen vegetables such as mixed peas, corn, carrots, beans, etc, and eggs. and this would be part of lunch. I would discard the sodium/chicken packet that came with it and throw in a bouillon cube or two when cooking… Less sodium and more of chicken soup flavor. I’d also crack an egg in the finished hot pot of water, noodles, and vegetables to ensure there was a little protein, and stir so the egg whites & yolk cooked in the water as I stirred. So, with that, I had carbs, protein, vegetables, flavor, and water in one meal.

Top 16 Items To Keep In Your Car In Case Of An Earthquake

Crummy earthquake kits don’t help either, which is why you should end up assembling your own. This is a list of the essential items you need to keep in your car in the event of an earthquake.

How To Establish A Sustainable Food Source On Your Balcony

When it comes to survival, everything starts from your mindset and preparedness. Your knowledge makes all the difference in what you can achieve.

That being said, don’t feel surprised if you will end up creating, growing, and sustaining a vegetable garden by yourself. And yes, you can do so even inside your tiny home!

Being 100% self-sufficient is a state of mind which involves your commitment, time, and patience.

Resources are surely the most important factor, but sometimes it takes very little of them, combined with a little energy, to make it happen.

Best Survival Food Companies

Best Survival Food Companies

*Short Story: If you just want to buy the absolute best value and quality food storage for your family of 4 people and be done with it, get the Auguson Farms 1 Year of Food Storage for 4 People.

For folks that are in a position to buy commercially manufactured survival food, there are a handful of solid options available. However, commercial, pre-packaged food is more expensive. These products are made to be shelf-stable for several years, and even decades in some cases.

Plus, let’s be honest, there are a lot of marketing dollars that pump the prices.

First, figure out how much food you’re getting for your money

One of the most confusing aspects of buying long term food from a manufacturer is trying to figure out how much you’re actually going to to get. Why? Because companies all use different measurements in their marketing and product descriptions, like “meals”, “servings”, “entrees”, and “pouches.”  These can be subjective and hard to gauge.

To cut through some of the fog, we recommend people take a look at the actual calories they’re buying. This is an objective benchmark, that isn’t really up for debate or interpretation. We also like to take a look at the “cost per 2,000 calories.” This is simply because some packages are bigger than others. It might actually end up being a better deal to buy 2 or 3 of a smaller package, rather than 1 bigger package.

9 Reasons For Hunting with a Bow & Arrow

Survival bows are easy to transport, have a wide variety of use, are cheap, and an excellent choice for hunting deer, coyote, mule, and elk.

While out in a survival situation or for hunting, most people’s everyday tool is a gun. But guns are very loud, and the sound will scare the prey away easily.

Getting a gun is complex, and maintaining them is no easy task. That is why many people opt to use traditional bow and arrows instead. Bows and arrows have many benefits that a conventional marksman rifle does not have.

Portable Backpacking Camp Stoves for Preppers

Backpack Camp Stove

Portable backpacking camp stoves can be an invaluable tool for preppers for many obvious reasons.

  • Sometimes you don’t have the ability to build a campfire, and sometimes you don’t have the time.
  • Some stoves use natural fuels more efficiently than a traditional campfire
  • Sometimes it’s just nice to be able to whip out a small stove and make a quick hot drink or heat water for a freeze dried meal.

Whatever your reason, be it camping, long-distance hiking, bugging out, or a grid down emergency, or even something else, a small camping stove should be part of your survival kit. However, there are a great many different ones out there, all using different types of fuel. We are going to look at six, all of which can be easily tossed into a bugout bag, or stashed with your camping gear.

All You Need to Know About Tactical Knives

Even though they have a lot of uses, tactical knives are mainly used for self-defense and military purposes.

It is important to know the uses of a tactical knife before thinking of purchasing one. A tactical knife is made to be readily available and is capable of being used for a range of activities. Tactical knives are also known as “combat knives” for they can be used for self-defense and as a military utility.

A combat knife is purely designed to use as a military utility and has a rugged and rough look to it. They usually have a fixed blade or a folded blade, depending on the way it will be used.

Civilians tend to carry a folded knife, as it is easy to hide for the sake of government laws and regulations. Whereas, military personnel usually carry fixed-blade combat knives.

The few things you need to consider before actually buying a tactical knife are: if you want the blade to be fixed or folded, the length of the blade, and the blade design. However, there are other factors you need to consider as well such as the design of the handle and the type of steel used to make the knife.

Off Grid Communication: How to Communicate without Phone or Internet

Communication, wherever you are, is a vital resource.

Whether you are a survivalist, prepper, hiker, hunter, or homesteader, having a method of off-grid communication is vital. Why is it important? Because when disaster strikes, an emergency happens, or when you are outdoors, too often we are left without cell phone service, and it is generally in those times that we need communication the most.

In regional areas, there is still scant phone coverage. In those circumstances, sure, we could use satellite phones, but if you have ever looked at their pricing you will know that satphones and satellite minutes can be ridiculously expensive.

With changes to technology, there are a few, much more affordable, alternative options that allow us to communicate with others. These options do not require us to use a cell phone signal, making them a way to communicate off-the-grid, so to say.

Hyperinflation: Cause for Concern or Food for Fiction?

 / By

image: inflation, hyperinflation, man with stacks of dollar bills

Do you ever feel like “enough is enough” when it comes to bad news in the headlines? That’s how I’m feeling after more than a year of covid-19 news and watching more violent protests than I ever care to see again. Now, with news of more trillion-dollar government spending, it seems inevitable that talk of economic collapse and hyperinflation prepping will once again take center stage in social media and in news sources.

What Is Hyperinflation?

Hyperinflation is the term for rapid, excessive, and out-of-control price increases for goods and services at a rate of 50% or more per month. That’s a mouthful. An easier description is when prices are skyrocketing so quickly that a loaf of bread costs $5 in the morning, $7 in the afternoon, and $10 the next day. Your dollar buys less and less each day until dollars are essentially worthless.

Considering that an inflation rate of 2% per year is considered normal in a healthy economy, inflation rates of 50% or more a month mean you are in economic collapse. If a country is anywhere near that number it means you’re already in a heap of trouble and headed for more. Hyperinflation prepping is taking a proactive stance to protect yourself and your family from this worst-case scenario.

Water Storage Barrel For Emergency Use – And How I Clean Them

It’s a smart thing to do. Water barrel storage. It is practical, reasonable preparedness.

Today I filled up and treated another 55 gallon water barrel for long term storage. Why? For emergency drinking water (or any other necessary water use).

There are many size water containers for storage. Various designs. Some, clever (stack-ability). I am writing this post today, clarifying how I sanitize them first and treat the water afterwards. Also to show you a unique stackable container (bottom of post).

I will let you know how I clean my 55 gallon drum for water storage.

Water Barrel Storage

A backup emergency supply of water! It’s one of my highest recommendations for general preparedness.

Here’s what I did:

I have several food grade barrels that originally stored some kind of food (I believe it was olives). Later they were repurposed for rainwater collection – which is how I bought them. Instead, I am using them for emergency water storage. My home relies on well water. Actually it’s pumped up from a natural spring via a ‘dug well’. In the event that my well pump goes bad, I will have some water on hand to use in the house.

The repair could take awhile. So, better safe than sorry, right? Also, it’s just good preparedness in general. We cannot survive very long without any water!

I am fortunate in that my water source is from a natural spring here on the property. It produces about 7 – 10 gallons per minute, year-round. If I needed to, I could always walk down there (to the spring) and collect water in a container via the spring’s overflow spout. Then haul it back to the house to keep my 55 gallon drums filled. Note, that would be a major chore – given that water weighs 8 pounds per gallon and the source is about 600 feet from the house! Yard cart? Better yet, my ATV towing its utility trailer (grin).

Best Off-Grid Hot Water Heater

 Samantha Biggers
 |  Updated: May 24, 2021

Hot water is definitely a luxury that you miss when you actually have to go without. As someone that did without running hot water for about 5 years while doing this homestead thing and building a house, I can say I was overjoyed when that electric hot water heater started providing the good stuff on demand.

When dealing with an off grid situation, hot water can seem like a big challenge. Now more than ever there are an array of off grid hot water heater options to choose from.

This is great news because an electric hot water heater is not feasible off grid. The heating element burns far too much electricity.

NO RELIEF IN SIGHT: FOOD PRICES WILL CONTINUE TO GO UP

Anyone who has been to the grocery store lately has likely noticed the spike in food prices. But most are warning that because this is a hyperinflation situation, we should be expecting the prices of food and other necessities to continue to go up.

According to a report by Yahoo News, food price inflation, on a 12-month unadjusted basis, is running at 2.4% and was up 0.4% in April, the largest increase since October 2020. Overall inflation is running at 4.2% the largest 12-month increase since a 4.9% increase for the period ending September 2008. Even that’s likely a dramatic understatement based on the fact that most report an over 20% rise in food costs.
