How Competitive Shooting Can Effect Your Survival

 Original Article

By Crystal Perry

You may think this is extreme; that I look more like I am going to battle in the deserts and mountains of Afghanistan.  However, this is not too far off from what our world may look like in the next couple of years.  One of the biggest hurtles that I believe America faces today is the fact that, we as a collective believe that we are impervious to the types of warfare, terrorism, conspiracies, emergencies, crime, economic meltdowns, etc. that the rest of the world faces on a daily basis.  Venezuela’s economic crash and subsequent government tyranny is one good example.  Currently, we watch Ukrainians picking guns out of crates with no gear and no experience, and they have been called on to fight in the resistance.  If there ever was a time to wake up it would be now.

Trigger Finger Positioning, Hand Clenches, and Accidental Discharges

 Original Article

Ten years ago, an experienced handgun instructor contacted me  to help him reconstruct the events of an accidental shooting.  This instructor shot himself while reholstering after doing a demonstration during a basic concealed handgun class.

I know what you are thinking….

Keeping Your Guns At The Ready – Do’s And Don’ts

 Original Article

By Cody Griffin

Gun safety is an integral part of gun ownership never to be overlooked.

Unfortunately, most gun safety courses are focused on drawing and holstering your weapon, marksmanship, and trigger control.

While these are important aspects of owning and shooting a gun, they don’t teach you what its like to have to use your firearm for self-defense. What is the best way to keep your survival gun so it’s always at the ready? How do you do so without jeopardizing the safety of your family and self?

Tips For Buying Used or Pre-Owned Firearms

 Original Article

by

I’m always intrigued by new firearms that appear on the market, but a quick glance at their price tags often redirects my attention to the used-gun rack. Second-hand firearms frequently come with lower price tags, and many times they feature better quality and craftsmanship than their brand-new, higher-priced counterparts.

In fact, some of the finest guns I’ve ever owned were purchased second-hand or, in some instances, even third or fourth-hand. But buying used does involve risks. In order to avoid a bad case of buyer’s remorse, you must approach these purchases cautiously and knowledgeably.

Tips For Wilderness Carry And Having The Right Handgun For The Job

 Original Article

by

I was with my friend, Tobey, for a ruffed grouse hunt in northern New Hampshire. The spot we were hunting was an area about 20 minutes away from his home in Lancaster. Tobey has a remote cabin on this property that is loaded with grouse. It also has its fair share of black bears.

As we geared up, I noticed that besides his shotgun, Tobey was also carrying two side arms: a Ruger Mark II .22 LR semi-automatic and a Smith & Wesson Model 66-5 .357 Magnum revolver with a 4-inch barrel.

While a sidearm is nothing unusual (I carry a Springfield XD-S 3.3 .45ACP semi-automatic, myself), I was wondering, Why is he carrying two sidearms? So, I asked him.

Handguns for Seniors – What to Look For

 Original Article

by Steve Markwith

handguns for seniors feature
S&W’s Shield EZ 9mm pistol, a solution for physically challenged shooters, or anyone shopping for an easy to operate handgun. Note the load-assisting ears on the magazines – a seemingly small but appreciated touch. The slide has a set, too.

Several acquaintances within my area contacted me for advice about “good” defensive firearms. All are longtime residents whom I’ve known since the early 1980s. Back then, few of us locked our doors and a common storage spot for a set of vehicle keys was the ignition.

But time marches on and those days are gone. Meanwhile, most of us qualify for senior discounts and we’re feeling less secure. The silver lining – if there is one: Age leads to experience.

Here we are discussing handguns for seniors.

Building the Ultimate Survival Rifle | ON Three

The Four Rules of Gun Safety

Note: I published this a few years ago and with the unfortunate accidental shooting event involving Alec Baldwin all over the news thought this would be a good time to bring it back. As humans, we tend to make mistakes – some more than others. Mistakes involving firearms can be not only dangerous but create life-changing events that some never recover from.

Stay safe my friends.

Over the past two months, I’ve worked with several new shooters and have gone over the four rules of gun safety – over and over and over again. I ended up seeing one couple at the range recently and witnessed safety infractions happening and had to speak up and say something. That was not at all what I taught them.

If you are new to shooting or maybe just never received the proper training read the following – and not just practice it but remember…and learn it.
GUN SAFETY RULE #1:

Every gun should be treated like it’s loaded. Complacency and carelessness have cost far too many lives and it’s totally preventable. Positive a gun is empty? Treat it likes it’s not.

GUN SAFETY RULE #2:

Handling a firearm comes with an awesome responsibility. Do not EVER point a firearm at something you are not willing to destroy – aka kill. This should be common sense but far too often it’s not. See someone break this rule accidentally? Let them know. It may be your life you end up saving.

A question that often comes up is – “Well, where should I point the gun?” This depends on where you are and where everyone else is. Bottom line is the gun should never point at any person. Many shooting ranges have rules stating all firearms must point downrange at all times. When carrying firearms – both pistols and long guns – I prefer to keep barrels pointing downward.

GUN SAFETY RULE #3:

Accidental discharges are more often than not caused by a finger pulling a trigger when the shooter was NOT ready to shoot. This is a simple fix by keeping your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

GUN SAFETY RULE #4:

Never shoot at anything you have not absolutely identified AND know what is behind it. Targets are often missed and you are accountable for every round exiting your gun. Bullets can travel great distances so you must know exactly where every shot will end up.

* * * * *

As a gun owner, you are responsible for handling all firearms in a safe manner. As a responsible advocate for the 2nd Amendment, I would go further to say you are also responsible for watching out for others to prevent accidents and help educate.

Be safe out there!

Firearms: Pros and Cons for Home Defense

You’ve seen in the news how criminals are getting fearless and how break-ins are becoming a common occurrence. Seeing how things are unfolding and hearing stories from neighbors and friends about unpleasant encounters with the criminal element are probably the main reasons you decide to get a firearm.

You are one step closer to keeping your family safe, but you still have to decide if you should go with a handgun, automatic rifle, or shotgun. You ask around, and you notice that everyone has a strong opinion regarding one of the three weapon systems, and even if the final choice is yours, there are still some questions you need to ask yourself. So before you ask your gun supplier which firearm he recommends, you should do a little bit of research on your own.
