How to Make a Pain Relief Balm

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

How to Make a Pain Relief Balm

One of the best ingredients for a pain relief balm is cayenne pepper because it contains capsaicin, a natural analgesic that blocks pain signals from reaching the brain. When you combine that with olive oil and essential oils, you can create a balm that relieves bruises, back pain, joint pain, nerve pain, sore muscles, arthritis, headaches, and aches in general.

This particular balm includes clove, peppermint, and lavender essential, each of which have their own pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and cooling properties. I found it on the Youtube channel, Danu's Irish Herb Garden. You can watch the video below, but I typed up the instructions for those who prefer to read.

Two Simple Methods for Infusion

In her video, Danu explains two different methods for infusing the cayenne into oil: a cold infusion that takes several weeks, and a hot infusion which only takes a few hours.

Cold Infusion (takes 4–6 weeks)

  1. Combine 8 oz olive oil and 4 tablespoons pure cayenne pepper in a glass jar.
  2. Stir well, seal the jar, and store it in a cool, dark place.
  3. Shake daily to prevent the cayenne from settling.
  4. After 4–6 weeks, strain the oil through muslin or cheesecloth to remove any remaining solids.

Hot Infusion (ready in a few hours)

  1. Place 8 oz olive oil and 4 tablespoons cayenne pepper in a heatproof bowl or double boiler.
  2. Gently heat the mixture using a water bath (never let it boil).
  3. Allow the oil to warm, then cool for about 20 minutes. Repeat this cycle for 3–4 hours.
  4. Strain through muslin or cheesecloth.

Turning the Infused Oil Into Balm

Once you have your infused oil, making the balm is simple:

  1. Gently heat the oil again using a double boiler.
  2. Stir in 1 oz beeswax until fully melted.
  3. Remove from heat.
  4. Add essential oils:
    • 15 drops of peppermint oil
    • 15 drops of lavender oil
    • 15 drops of clove oil
  5. Pour into clean jars and let them cool fully before sealing.

Note: Always use pure essential oils, not synthetic fragrance oils.

Safety Tips:

  • Only apply to unbroken skin.
  • Avoid touching your eyes after application.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after use.
  • Don't use too much. A little goes a long way!
