Simple Survival Tips - Leave A Note

Original Article

A failure to properly communicate with others about your intentions can often have disastrous consequences. The simple act of leaving a note that explains where you are going, how long you expect to be gone, and when you plan to be back can be the difference in whether or not you survive should something go terribly wrong.

It can also help you to establish a goal for for survival. If someone knows when to expect you back, they will know to come looking for you. You will be able to set a goal for how long it will be necessary for you to"go it alone" until help will arrive. A short note left in your car or at home explaining your travel or hiking plans can make a big difference. Your odds of rescue on a desolate back country road or a wilderness hiking trail go up dramatically by the simple act of leaving a note.

If nobody knows where you are, how you plan to get there, where you are headed once you reach your destination and how long you plan to stay, you could find yourself in a very dangerous situation.

Episode-690- Not the End but a Massive Shift of the World as we Know It

Original Article

One of the favorite topics on prepper forums and in doomer literature is TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it).  I think what many fail to focus on with this is the (as we know it) portion.  The fact is the world as people of their time knew it has ended many times, it will continue to end. At one time a Roman citizen was the most advantaged in the world, so also there was a time when it was a great to be a Greek, an Aztec or a member of the Hopi Tribe.  None of these civilizations really “ended” they shifted and adapted, the decedents are here with us.  In the case of the Greeks they are now on the verge of bankruptcy but we still have Greece.  The Aztecs may be gone but their descendants are part of the blood of Mexican and Latin American citizens today as are many of their customs. Shifts are strange, at times they benefit us, sometimes they harm us and sometimes they can all but destroy us.  Some our subtle and some are massive and even tiny shifts can cause massive change over time.  The only constant in [...]

The Survivalist's Bookshelf

Original Article

When it comes to preparing for disaster, almost everything you need to do/know/learn can be found online.  There may be a time, however, when power is not available, the internet is not available, and all of the information that you have so careful stored away in the cloud is unreachable.  This is why, even though nearly all of my survival-related stuff is online, I still have a stack of useful books in storage for use in the event that TSHTF and I need valuable survival information at my fingertips.  Here's some books that should be in your library:

That's a pretty long list but it hits all of the essential skills: how to find food, how to prepare food, how to preserve food, how to take care of medical emergencies, how to navigate, how to make shelter, and a multitude of other survival skills.

DIY Electrolyte Powders

Original Article

Most experts would agree that drinking water is the best way to curb your thirst.  According to experts, a good guideline to use when preparing for any type of outdoor activity is to drink two cups of fluid two hours before the activity.  That helps ensure you are well-hydrated before you ever go outdoors.  Then, during the activity drink 4-6 ounces every 15-20 minutes to keep your muscles well-hydrated.  If you are planning on an extensive outdoor activities, fill a water bottle with about 16 ounces (or two cups) of fluid and take it with you.  Last, drink up after you’re finished with your activity.

Making your own electrolyte powder is a low cost alternative to purchasing expensive sports drinks.  An added bonus to making your own electrolyte powder is it gives you complete control over the ingredients of the electrolyte drink.  Carrying the powders with you in your 72-hour bag, your vehicle, and even in your child’s back pack would be prudent especially during the summer months.  Using the correct proportions of water, salt, potassium salt and optionally baking soda, you can make a very effective electrolyte drink.  It will both rehydrate you as well as keep your electrolyte levels up to par. Let’s take a look at three recipes to make your own drink with electrolytes–two with sugar and one without:

Sugar Option

This option is made with sugar: When you work out, your body does not only lose water and electrolytes, it burns energy as well. To make sure you can keep your activity level up, it is a good idea to add some kind of sugar to your drink.
2 quarts of water

5-10 tablespoons of sugar

1 teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon of baking soda

½ teaspoon of salt substitute (potassium salt)

1 pack of sugar-free drink flavoring

Sugar-Free Versions

Sugar free: Although adding sugar to your drink will help you keep your energy levels up, it’s not a good option for everyone. People on a low-carb diet or people with diabetes, can choose a recipe that doesn’t add sugar to the electrolyte drink:
Version 1
1 quart of water

250 ml of orange juice (citrus juice is a natural source of potassium ions)

3 tablespoons of lemon juice

¾ teaspoon of salt
Version 2
2 quarts of water

1 teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon of baking soda

½ teaspoon of salt substitute (potassium salt)

1 pack of sugar free drink flavoring

Artificial sweetener to taste
