DIY Household Cleaners

The problems obtaining common household cleaners during the late scamdemic have apparently been resolved for the moment, but they could return at any time. This is where being able to make our own cleaners comes in very handy. I use all these cleaners myself and they work very well. The price is right, too.

Glass Cleaner
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
1/4 cup vinegar
2 cups water
1 tablespoon cornstarch

Combine everything together in a spray bottle. The cornstarch always settles to the bottom, so you will need to shake it every time you use it. But trust me, cornstarch is what makes the difference in this cleaner.

Bathroom Cleaner
1 1/2 cups white vinegar
1 cup Dawn dish soap

Heat the vinegar until it is very hot and pour it into a spray bottle. Add the dish detergent, replace the spray top, and shake well. Use sparingly. This cleaner also works very well on burnt-on gunkus on the stovetop. Just apply liberally and let it sit for a while before wiping clean.

Furniture Polish
1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup vinegar
a few drops of lemon essential oil, optional

Measure ingredients into a salad dressing bottle or spray bottle. Apply to a clean dust cloth and wipe on the furniture.

Carpet Cleaner
2 cups salt
2 cups water
1 cup white vinegar

Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and shake vigorously to dissolve salt. Spray on carpet and let soak for a few minutes before scrubbing.
