The Best Place for a Survival Retreat

By Joseph Parish

I am often asked what my opinion is for a successful retreat location. In all honesty I could not really take a guess at a specific location. I can however provide you with a few clues as to what you should look for when making this important decision.

Each location usually has their advantages as well as their downside. Some areas may have an abundance of meaningless regulations and un-necessary red tape then others which could greatly hinder your retreat building and ultimate survival plans. Other areas under consideration may be a bit more remote then what you possibly would like. Perhaps you are not particularly fond of wintertime weather and its accompanying cold spells. Myself, I generally would try to avoid the more extreme climates. I see no sense in placing myself at any sort of seasonal disadvantage as that would merely be inviting additional problems. This type of decision would have to be entirely up to you. If you are willing to make the necessary sacrifices then possibly the weather could work to your advantage such as with extremes in temperatures will come the advantages of smaller population levels which are good in a way. You would also find less people moving into those areas in a time of crisis.

Some locations around the country have natural phenomenon that must be taken into consideration such as tornados, hurricanes or earthquakes. Once again I personally would avoid these types of areas.

What about fertile soil? If you plan to be self sufficient you should be able to produce your own supply of food. Ask yourself if the wildlife is readily accessible within the area that you are thinking about? This thought also reverts back to being able to feed your family in an emergency.

Above all, I would recommend that you use your “gut instinct” when making your evaluations. You have to remember that you will need to base your decision upon all of the information above concerning your selected area which you are considering such as future projections towards both the severity and the various type of crisis’s which could occur there.

There are several no-no’s that are especially important. During times of unrest you should avoid being in the city. Try not to create your retreat near high profile locations like military bases, military silos or airports. You would not want to leave yourself open for NBC attacks should they occur near by. In times of enemy attack these are very vulnerable points graphically. If your concern is raising flood waters you may wish to build on mountain tops or at the higher elevations.

Try to look at those areas which would make for a good homestead location for which you could grow your family and be safe. It is firmly my belief that in the long run you will have to produce your own food if things get really bad so you should plan accordingly.

In addition another important point well worth considering that you may wish to locate close to family and friends. A reliable support network would be extremely useful in these hard times. Security is very important and along with reliable group members you may wish to consider the associated gun and property laws in the area.

Being a home school family I would also add that the location should have reasonable home schooling laws as well. Be sure that you check these out carefully as there are some states which have some outdated and archaic concepts involving home schooling.

In conclusion I would personally seek out an area with a mild kind of climate that did not experience huge seasonal changes, one which provides good farm land, little or no government intervention and an area with a low population level.
