Every Tuesday, we post specific items you should gather in order to supplement your 72-hour kit, your 3-month supply, and your longer-term storage. If you are new to our blog, don't worry! You won't be left behind. Just start up where we are and follow along. You will eventually have everything completed! Once the 72-hour kit is complete (in just a few weeks!), we'll be putting together emergency car kits again (week by week). Once those are done, we'll gather the 72-hour kits again. So don't worry, just jump on in and join us where we are today!

This week for your 72-hour kits, add emergency thermal blankets. These are very cheap ($1-5 each, depending on brand) and could be essential in an emergency. In the column to the right of this post, you'll see an Amazon link to a 4-pack of these blankets (on sale for $5!). Obviously, you can buy them other places, so look around and find what works best for you. You may also want to add one or two of these blankets to your car kits, especially if you live in a colder climate. Also, consider adding some glow sticks to your kits this week - a couple per person.

How is your three-month supply coming along? Have a meal plan, and buy according to that. Because we are always adding new recipes here at SGI, you may even want to make a 3-week meal plan (instead of 2 weeks like we originally did) and rotate that 4 times (for 12 weeks total). I don't know about you, but I've got to add that pizza recipe to my plan!!

This month, we are gathering OATS for our longer-term storage. Not sure how much you need? Check out Provident Living's food storage calculator here. Oats will be stored along with your other grains. To find some great food storage recipes using oats, check out our oats recipes (so far) here.

Tomorrow, we'll post some general information about oats. Thursday, we'll have a great article about 72-hour kit distribution. What do you put in each person's kit? Find out Thursday! And of course, Friday is another great food storage recipe using only non-perishable items.
